Experiment # 8: Design and Implementation of Sync/Async Counters

Lab Report Format:

1. Introduction

( 0.25 points)

State the objective(s) of the experiments briefly in few sentences.

2. Background

(0.5point)

Briefly discuss about the problems faced by asynchronous counter and why the glitches are observed. Show the glitches using clock pulse sequence.  This should be at least half  page long.

3. Equipment List

( 0.5 points)

List the ICs that you have used for realizing the circuit(s). State explicitly  if you used any datasheet from the lab or from manufacturers website. Also mention if you employed  LED or resistances. State how you obtained the clock pulses for the counters.

4. Experimental Procedure

(1.5  points)

State the observed sequence of asynchronous counted that you have designed and implemented. State the design methodology that you employed for designing synchronous counter in the Part B of this experiment.  Briefly describe verification and results of your implementation for synchronous counter. Show the full schematic of the implemented asynchronous and synchronous counter. Make sure to include the pin numbers from the chip to show its all input and output connections.

5. Analysis

( 0.5 point)

Discuss the outcome of your implementation for each of the two counters and if your circuit worked in first attempt. List the debugging procedure that you followed to detect and correct the problem in the implementation of synchronous counter.

6. Conclusions

( 0.25 points)

Discuss your experience on implementing a synchronous and asynchronous counter. State the results of your implementation and whether the objective was met.

7. Pre-Lab Exercises

(1.5  points)

Briefly discuss the solutions to each of the three problems detailed in the pre-lab exercises. This should not be more than two pages.

Attach the Original Lab Tables with Signature(s)
