Internet and Mobile Computing Laboratory - IMCL

Internet and Mobile Computing Laboratory

The Internet and Mobile Computing Laboratory is established in 2002 to conduct research on distributed systems, Internet computing, mobile and pervasive computing, and wireless networks (including wireless ad hoc and sensor networks). Its focuses are on the development and evaluation of architectures, protocols, and algorithms for high- performance networking and distributed computing, addressing such issues as efficiency, quality of service, scalability, reliability, security, and interoperability. Middleware and applications are also important components of the Lab’s research.

The Internet and Mobile Computing Lab brings forth the expertise and experiences of researchers from diverse backgrounds including network communications, parallel and distributed computing, mobile computing, embedded systems, and software engineering within the Department. The members have carried out funded projects, and are very active and productive, and are prominent in their areas. Their papers appear in top international journals and conference proceedings. Besides state-of-the-art research, the Internet and Mobile Computing Lab also aims at facilitating the transfer of technology from mainstream research into applied research, so as to nourish more ITF and industrial projects.

In the past five years, the group has received grants totaling over HK$28 million from the Hong Kong Government (RGC, ITC, OFTA) and from companies including Huawei, Nokia and Tsinghua Tongfang. The members have also participated in collaborative projects with Chinese Mainland universities funded by China’s NSFC, National 973 and 863 High Tech programs. The Lab has hosted many international conferences, including IEEE Percom’08, UIC’07, ATC’07 and MSN’07. The Lab members have been serving as chairs, panel members, and editors of prestigious international conferences and journals.
