Professor Jiannong Cao is a chair professor and the head of the Department of Computing at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He is also the director of the Internet and Mobile Computing Lab in the department. Before joined The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1997, he has been on faculty of computer science in James Cook University and The University of Adelaide in Australia, and the City University of Hong Kong. Professor Cao is currently an adjunct professor of Sun Yat-Sen University. He also held several adjunct and visiting positions, including an adjunct chair professor of Central South University; an adjunct professor of National University of Defense Technology, Northeastern University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Northwestern Polytechnical University, and Beijing Jiaotong University; a guest professor of Shenzhen University; a visiting research professor in the National Key Lab for Novel Software Technology, Nanjing University of China; a visiting fellow in the School of Computer Science and Engineering, Nanyang Technological University of Singapore; a visiting scholar of the Institute of Software at Chinese Academy of Science, and Peking University Overseas Scholar Lecture Program.
Professor Cao’s research interests include parallel and distributed computing, wireless networks and mobile computing, big data and cloud computing, pervasive computing, and fault tolerant computing. He has co-authored 5 books in Mobile Computing, co-edited 9 books, and published over 500 papers in major international journals and conference proceedings (including top journals IEEE Network, TC, TMC, TPDS, TWC, TDSC, JSAC, TCOM, TSE; ACM TOSN, TOIT, TAAS; and PMCJ, TON, JPDC, and top conferences INFOCOM, ICNP, PERCOM, WWW, DSN, ICDCS, SRDS).
Professor Cao has directed and participated in over 90 research and development projects and, as a principal investigator, obtained over HK$40 million grants from funding agencies such as National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), Ministry of Science and Technology of P. R. China (MOST), Hong Kong Research Grant Council (RGC), Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC), Hong Kong Construction Industry Council, The Society of Hong Kong Scholars, and industries like Huawei, IBM and Nokia. Professor Cao has also involved in the development of 13 patents.
With exceptional research performance and achievement, Professor Cao has earned wide recognitions with numerous prizes and awards. He has received several outstanding awards in research from Faculty of Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (in 2003, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2012 and 2013) and received The President’s Award for Excellent Performance/Achievement in Research and Scholarly Activities in 2009. Professor Cao also awarded many different national and international honors and recognitions including Bronze Medal at Brussels Innova 2009, Second Class Award at 2006 National Science and Technology Progress Award, CVIC SE Software Talent Award in 2005 by CVIC Software Engineering Co. Ltd. (the largest software company in China, recognized by Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology), nominee of First Class Award at 2003 Ministry of Education Nominated State Science and Technology Award; and several Best Paper Awards (UIC/ATC/ScalCom/CBDCom/IoP/SmartWorld 2016, SMARTCOMP 2016, ISPA 2013, WCNC 2011, etc.).
Professor Cao is a fellow of IEEE, a member of ACM, a senior member of China Computer Federation (CCF). He is very active in professional activities locally and internationally. He served as the Chair of Technical Committee on Distributed Computing (TPDC), IEEE Computer Society (2012-2014), a vice chairman of CCF’s Technical Committee on Computer Architecture (2004-2007). Professor Cao has also served as chairs and members of organizing and technical committees of many international conferences, including PERCOM, INFOCOM, SMARTCOMP, ICMU, ICPP, MASS, ICPADS, IWQoS, ICDCS, DSN, SRDS, ICNP, and RTSS. Professor Cao has served as an associate editor and a member of the editorial boards of many international journals, including IEEE TPDS, TCC, TC, IEEE Network, ACM TOSN, Elsevier Pervasive and Mobile Computing Journal (PMCJ), Springer Peer-to-Peer Networking and Applications, and Wiley Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing. Furthermore, Professor Cao has been invited to give keynotes at many top international academic conferences comprising of CloudCom, ICA3PP, CollaborateCom, SKG, ICMU, ICDCN, CCBD, PAAP, UMedia, NCTC, ChinaCom, ICPADS, CUTE, PDCAT, IET-WSN, WSNC, etc.
With his expertise in Engineering, Computer Science and related fields, Professor Cao has been invited as a technical adviser to provide practical advices to the local/ national/ international government bodies and industries. Professor Cao is currently a member of Innovation and Technology Fund Research Projects Assessment Panel, Innovation and Technology Commission; member of IEEE Computer Society Education Awards Selection Committee; and member of IEEE Communications Society Awards Committee. Besides, Professor Cao was the panel member in Engineering section of the RGC helping in assessing the project grants applications (2010-2016); an admission panel of Incu-Tech Business Incubation Programme, Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (2014-2016); a member of Steering Committee on Enriched IT Programme in Secondary Schools, Office of the Government Chief Information Officer (OGCIO) (2014-2016); and a member of IEEE CS Fellows Evaluation Committee (2015, 2016). Moreover, Professor Cao has served as Academic Advisory Committee member of universities and research institutions in Mainland China, including State Key Laboratory for Novel Software Technology at Nanjing University, Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology at Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shaanxi Province Key Laboratory for Embedded Systems Technology at Northwestern Polytechnical University, and Guizhou Province Key Laboratory for Electric Power Big Data at Guizhou Institute of Technology. Professor Cao has invited by NSFC and MOST for many years in reviewing research projects and assessing in funding and award applications.
