Jiannong Cao is a full professor and associate head of the Department of Computing at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He is also the director of the Internet and Mobile Computing Lab in the department. Before joined the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1997, he has been on faculty of computer science in James Cook University and The University of Adelaide in Australia, and the City University of Hong Kong. Jiannong Cao is an adjunct professor of Beijing Jiaotong University, National University of Defense Technology and Northwest Polytechnic University, and a guest professor of Central South University in China. He also held several visiting positions, including a visiting research professor in the National Key Lab for Novel Software Technology, Nanjing University of China, a visiting fellow in the School of Computer Engineering, Nanyang Technological University of Singapore, a visiting scholar at the Institute of Software, Chinese Academy of Science, and Peking University Overseas Scholar Lecture Program.

Jiannong. Cao received the B.Sc. degree in computer science from Nanjing University, China, in 1982, and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from Washington State University, USA, in 1986 and 1990, all in computer science. From 1982 to 1983, he studied as a MSc. student in the Graduate School of the Chinese Acadmy of Science in Beijing.

Research

Jiannong Cao's research interests include mobile and pervasive computing, wireless networking, parallel and distributed computing, fault tolerance, and distributed software architecture and programming. His main areas of expertise are the design and evaluation of algorithms and the development of system models and tools for computer networking and parallel/distributed computing. His recent research has focused on how to develop protocols/algorithms and build middleware and applications, more specifically within the context of Wireless Networking, Pervasive and Mobile Computing, Peer-to-Peer Computing, and Grid. He has co-authored a book in mobile computing, co-edited 9 books, and published over 280 papers in internationa journals and conference proceedings (including IEEE TSE, TC, TPDS, TWC, TKDE, TVT; IEEE Computer, IEEE Internet Computing, CACM, JPDC, PMC, and top conferences ICDCS, PERCOM, INFOCOM, WWW, DSN, SRDS) .

Jiannong Cao has directed and participated in many research/teaching projects funded by Hong Kong Research Grant Council, Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Commission, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Huawei, Nokia, NSFC and Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology.

Dr. Cao has taught many courses in computer sciences including Computer Networks, Parallel and Distirbuted Computing, Fault Tolerant Computing, Operating Systems, Software Engineering, System Programming, Programming Paradigms, Advanced Java Programming, Foundations of Object Technologies, E-Commerce, etc. Currently, he is teaching the following courses:
