Edward Hung is an assistant professor at the Department of Computing, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He received his B.Eng. in Computer Engineering and M.Phil. in Computer Science from the University of Hong Kong in 1998 and 2000 respectively. He obtained his M.S. degree and Ph.D. degree from the Department of Computer Science, the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) in May 2002 and May 2005. He was supported by Scholarships from the Croucher Foundation and research assistantship for his Ph.D. research during 2000 - 2003 and 2003 - 2005 under supervision of Prof. V.S. Subrahmanian. He was awarded a number of scholarships and awards, including Jacob K. Goldhaber Travel Grant Award, Hung Hing Ying Scholarship, Epson Foundation Scholarship, the Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited Postgraduate Scholarship, Stephen Kam-Chuen Cheong Memorial Scholarships, and the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers Student Prize, etc.

Edward's general research area is database, data mining, uncertainty reasoning and semantic web. He has broad interests in model theory, algebra, query processing, view maintenance, data warehousing and data integration, involving relational, XML, RDF and OWL databases. His recent research interests include outlier detection, probabilistic ontology, probabilistic data mining, classification, privacy preserving in data mining, etc. He has obtained over HK$870K for external competitive grant projects and over HK$870K for internal competitive grant projects. He has thirty six publications (twenty four conference papers, nine journal articles and three book chapters) related to data mining (for uncertain data, outsourcing, parallel system), outlier detection, classification, web search result clustering, probabilistic ontology, RDF aggregates and view maintenance, recall improvement in XML queries by ontologies and similarities, probabilistic semistructured databases, data warehousing and E-commerce.

Edward has been working on several exciting and interesting research projects with his Ph.D students: Dr LI Yan (graduated on 2010, working in Shenzhen Polytechnic now), SZETO Chi Cheong (awardee of Best Student Paper Award of APWeb 2011), XU Lei, MATSUMOTO Takazumi (awardee of Hong Kong PhD Fellowship). Edward has also been supervising 48 Final Year Project (undergraduate) students so far.
