Simon C. K. Shiu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computing, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science in 1985 and 1997 respectively, from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. In 1986 he received another M.Sc. in Business Systems Analysis and Design from the City University of London. He worked at the Hong Kong Baptist University, Star Telecom and Bondwell during 1985 to 1990 as a computer administrator/ system analyst and IT manager. Dr. Shiu is a professional member of the BCS, IEEE, ACM and HKCS. His research interests include Artificial Intelligence, Case-Based Reasoning, Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning, Image Processing, 3D games, Data Mining, Soft Computing, Neural Nets, Genetic Algorithms, Fuzzy Sets, and Rough Sets. Dr. Shiu served as Guest Editor of Applied Intelligence, and had held workshops on soft case-based reasoning. He received several CERG grants and published over 40 research articles in journals such as IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, International Journal of Approximate Reasoning, Applied Intelligence, Soft Computing, Computational Intelligence, Journal of Intelligent and Fuzzy Systems and Expert Systems with Applications. Dr. Shiu is supervising a number of Ph.D. and M.Phil. students in the area of soft computing, case-based reasoning and multimedia systems and applications.

In 2004, Dr. Shiu has published, together with Professor Sankar K. Pal, a research monograph "Foundations of Soft Case-Based Reasoning". Forward by Professor Lotfi Zadeh and published by John Wiley and Sons, Inc., New York. ISBN 0-471-08635-5. Details.

Book Review by Vladik Kreinovich, Book Review Editor, Journal of Intelligent and Fuzzy Systems, Vol. 16, No.2, 2005, p.155 ".... well-written and self-contained.... can be used by students who want to learn new techniques... practitioners... and ... researchers..."

Book Review by Professor Lotfi Zadeh, "Beyond Case-Based Reasoning, Foundations of Soft Case-Based Reasoning is a must reading for anyone who is interested in the conception, design, and utilization of intelligent systems."
