Dr. Simon C. K. Shiu obtained his degrees from City University of London, Newcastle Upon Tyne University and Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1985, 1986 and 1997 respectively. He has over 30 years of working experience in business, industry and universities. He started his career as a programmer, system analyst and computer manager in various organizations in Hong Kong. He joined the HK Polytechnic University in 1990, and since then, he focuses his teaching and research in artificial intelligence and computer games. He has written one graduate level textbook in Case-based reasoning, i.e., “Foundation of Soft Case-Based Reasoning” published by John Wiley in 2004, and successfully supervised 4 PhD, 4 MPhil, and 37 MSc students. He had published 28 refereed journal papers, 5 book chapters and 53 conference papers. As a principal investigator, Dr. Shiu received grants from CERG, HK PhD Fellowship, Engineering Faculty and others with an overall amount of HKD 5 million. He also carried out consultancy projects with organizations such as the HK Police Force, Marine Police Force, Tuen Mun Yan Oi Tong and a few departments in the HK Government. He also served as an external examiner and moderator for the HK College of Technology, Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA), and the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE). He was a programme committee member for many international conferences, and guest editor for several journal special issues. Dr. Shiu received the President’s Award for Excellent Performance / Achievement 2007 / 2008 - Team Award, for his services in consultancy services to the community and computer games education

Currently, Dr. Shiu is the Chairman of the MSc scheme in Computing as well as a member in the Departmental Management Committee and the Learning and Teaching committee.
