The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Low Resolution Fingerprint Database (Version 1.0)

The fingerprint identification is most established and widely employed biometrics identifier to date. Recently there has been increasing interest in the identification of very low-resolution biometric images resulting from widely deployed surveillance cameras and mobile phones.  In this context, there is no publicly and/or freely available database of very-low resolution fingerprint images to foster research efforts in this area. The researchers at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University have been therefore developing a very low resolution and contactless fingerprint image database since April 2009. The objective is to establish large scale low-resolution fingerprint image database for the research and make it available in the public domain to help initiate research efforts in this direction.

Brief Description

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University low resolution fingerprint database consists of low resolution finger surface images images contributed from the the male and female volunteers. This database has been largely acquired in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University campus during April 2009 - March 2010 using a contactless setup that uses a low resolution and low-cost webcam. This database has 1466 images from the 156 subjects, all the images are in bitmap (*.bmp) format. In this dataset about 93% of the subjects are younger than 30 years. The finger images were acquired in two separate sessions with a minimum interval of one month, maximum interval of over six months and the average interval of 66.8 days. In each session, each of the subjects provided 6 index finger image samples for this database.

Sample Images

The entire database as detailed above is made available for the research. The sample images from this database from two subjects are reproduced in the following set.
